My last post was an homage to Jack Kirby's Fantastic Four work (specifically the Fantastic Four Annual #6). I changed the thing that Reed holds in panel one to look like a contaminated autoradiography plate. In Kirby's it's a picture of the negative zone. Autoradiography for contamination control is still pretty common and the first thing I thought of to justify having the turtle guy get pissed off after seeing a hard copy of something in an otherwise futuristic lab.

I loved having the turtle guy accuse Reed and Johnny of smoking pot in the lab. That had to be the situation with Reed, Johnny, and Ben, right?

Back home from Vietnam.

Barbed wire fences should all be rusty. Even better when they are underlined by broken bottles in mortar! I wonder if the broken bottle fence was in place first, before the owners could afford the barbed wire?

This wall was actually about 6 feet high; it surrounds land owned by the artist Thanh Chuong- I believe the land borders military training grounds. Was odd to see his artistic haven while hearing guns blazing in the background.

Assholes like me won't shut up about the genius of Paul Pope. Everybody that's put brush to paper would agree, and many younger artists working today are devotees to the brush because of him. His evangelical podcast appearances and lectures (I'll reference a few at the end of this post) somewhat explain but definitely highlight his unapologetic brush fetish. My attraction to his work is most certainly informed by lectures and interviews; he approaches comics with an art historian's detachment even though he's putting down the lines that people will be gawking at 200 years from now.

Following Paul Pope and his work changed the way I see all forms of art. It was the first time I was exposed to someone who openly spoke of their influences and didn't sound like a blabbering fan or a bullshitter- he sounds like a serious academic. I'm the first to admit that old school training in engineering and science really wrecked my ability to appreciate art for a long time. [I think that "art student envy" is pretty common in engineering departments.] I've heard people call him pretentious, but I think it's safe to assume that those people have never worked in a research environment and are threatened by the rigidity and structure of his speech. [Pepper his speech with a few equations and he'd fit in at an American Physical Society conference.]

I've heard people say that they don't like his art, but it's always someone whose taste I disagree with. Whatever. I subscribe to the "art's subjective" mentality (probably because I'm public-school-uneducated in the arts). My hoochie mamma, Yiba Jaba, says that his line looks "too macho". When I asked if she likes Paul Pope's art, she shrugs and says "I like Chris Ware's." (I don't know what she means either.)

Of course I dig it, study it, and attempt to rip it off-- but I can't explain why it's my favorite.

Here's a sequence of four impossibly charming panels. Adam Strange, who turns into an old man when he "zeta beams" to earth, wonders if his fly lady would be an old lady if she too traveled to earth. "No matter. I would still love her either way."

His buddy comes over and they crush up some kind of pill and smoke it. The dragon guy has an automatic pipe that uses ATR & FTIR to determine the temperature at which to heat whatever's loaded in it. When they're done smoking, an argon plasma sweeps the pipe so that the dragon guy can never get busted.

Last Year's APE

I found some notes from last year's Alternative Press Expo (APE) while cleaning this morning. For me, the highlight guests were Dan Clowes and Tony Millionaire. These guys are superstars in the world of the "Alternative Press Expo" and they were rightfully fawned over by fans every time I saw them.

I attended Dan Clowes' panel and expected him to be a mean, angry curmudgeon of a guy. I was totally wrong. I can't remember the panel moderator, but he led the panel as an "X or Y"(e.g. "Jack Kirby or Wally Wood?") question session, seeding a brainstorming session in which Clowes freely described influences, inspirations, heroes, and a few irritations in the world of comics. I love panels like this, when the artist talks freely and reveals a deep, scholarly knowledge of the history of their craft. I'm really excited that he'll be back for APE 2011.

Tony Millionaire didn't disappoint either. Cartoonist Renee French moderated his panel- it was also a scripted Q&A. French's deadpan, innocent delivery of questions obviously penned by Millionaire may have slightly helped keep him in check, but he really let loose with absurdist anecdotes. His delivery and the esoterica involved really sold the stories as real. I found a tiny notebook today from APE- luckily for me I wrote down some of the questions... here they are:

"What were the two most effective punching techniques that you used in the early to mid 1980s?"

"Have you ever splattered the walls with the blood of your enemies?"

"Did you ever have intimate relations with a basset hound at 2:00 AM on University Street?"

His answer to the last question was followed by "are there any kids in the room?"

I remember reading an old analysis of the Marvel characters Spider-Man and Daredevil. This article suggested that readers find themselves rooting for Spider-Man when he is losing the battle and for Daredevil when he's winning.

That comparison popped in my head this morning when thinking of Robert Smith [of the Cure] and Morrissey [of the Smiths]. I correlate Morrissey to Daredevil and Robert Smith to Spider-Man; that is, I like when Morrissey's in good spirits and I prefer when Robert Smith is down in the dumps. In my head, a happy-go-lucky Robert Smith goes to Cinnabon or TCBY with some fat goth chicks. When Morrissey's feeling optimistic he's strolling down the street with a few thin guys sporting tight jeans and pompadours, trying to decide which storefront window to put a rock through.

Anthology!

All week I was excited for the weekend- nearly two full days to spend inking comics for the upcoming 11 O'clock Comics forum's anthology. I've got a whole lot of travel coming up but I think I shouldn't have trouble finishing by the upcoming deadline.

I started using the ink that Paul Pope recommended in his SDCC inking demo (and a podcast interview or two) and really really like it. It is much more viscous and heavily black than Higgins Black Magic or Speedball Super Black. The ink appears to contain pigment of a much larger particle size than other inks. The "vegetable oil soot" particles sit on top of the paper with a visible texture. I would refer to this texture as a "second order" blackness: the diffusion of light.

I've always noticed how moths are drawn to light but never cared enough to investigate why. Even now, I'm sure the answer is a Google away. I'd rather keep it a mystery. I've encountered two instances of humans displaying similar behavior. One of those two makes sense to me, the other I do not understand at all. I barely grasp the physics of the second, honestly.

The first of these examples I've witnessed (and fell prey to) on more occasions than I'd like to admit: oxygen-enriched air. I used to work in the sort of big heavy dirty industrial plant that looks, to lay people, like that screen-saver of the random pipes. One of the major pipelines involved in the process where I worked (it was a 60" diameter pipe) was a line that carried air that was enriched with about 20% additional oxygen. Long story short, it had a leaky valve stem and it never got fixed. Whenever we would go up to check it out, we would just sit there on the catwalk above the valve and drift into conversation, our bodies and minds finding ways to keep us from leaving the oxygen enriched air around the leak. In hindsight, I can't believe it never got fixed and it was creepy to think how quickly we forgot why we went up there in the first place. There was no hazard to health there, it was honestly safer than any other part of the plant since the constant flow of gas out of the valve stem made this one of the only places where a pocket of carbon monoxide couldn't develop. The experience was intoxicating.

The second one, Cherenkov radiation, I have never seen with my own eyes. That's the typically blue glow around the core of a nuclear reactor. Supposedly you see it and you want to dive in the water. Visible photons are ejected from a shock front of charged particles traveling faster than light. A classical example would be to imagine really fast electrons pushing photons out of the way as they haul ass through an insulator. Again, I've never seen this, only heard accounts of it.

It feels really weird to reach way back in the old 'tool box' and find out just how rusty that I am at math. Last couple of days I've been relearning some basic differential equation solving techniques; I'm surprised by what pops into my mind.

The math comes back after a little bit. Whenever I revisit old topics of study I enjoy the associated interesting memories that pop up, as if these memories are just 'stuck' to the math topics in my brain.

I remember my instructor: a prematurely balding dude who refused to ever wear long pants. His wife, also a mathematician, made his clothes.

I remember being pretty good friends with a classmate; we gambled on who would get the highest score on exams. I think the stakes were $5-10. I don't remember who won more often.

Grant Morrison's JLA was coming out. Superhero books were getting big and loud again.

I get stuck in the past when I think like this.

Elevation

I tend to be on the introspective side of normal, but tonight I find myself wanting to release a poll of sorts.

Here's the situation; you're a maintenance guy on a colony on the moon with like forty inhabitants. It's about a half mile walk from your outpost to the settlers; they're all upper class people that you don't interact with much. You're alone. You're mostly there so that the colonists feel safe that somebody is there to fix their washing machines and stuff. Things don't break down much on the moon colony.

BUT

You get a message from Earth that robots are moving towards the colony. These robots are going to attack the colony. The Earth base informs you that you have a secret stash of weapons in one of the supply crates. Military support arrives in a day or so.

Do you arm yourself and defend the colony?

Without a doubt, I respond "HELL, YES."

Is this because I was raised as a comics book reader? Is my world view out of whack?

What's your instinct?

Perhaps a deeper analysis would probe the era in which a comic aficionado was raised when answering this: Lee/Kirby fans vs. Byrne/Claremont and all that.

My goal is to make blog posts that appeal to a microscopic subsection of the populace, apparently.

Most comic collectors are pack rats. I'm one of them. I have a real hard time parting with objects that I've attached some sort of sentimental meaning to. I have a sizable collection of cassette tapes that I just can't part with; a subsection of these tapes belonged to my dad. I was indoctrinated to music by the selection shown below:

Growing up with this music explains why I dismissed all sorts of late 80s radio crap. I didn't really even have music of 'my own' until Scott Fidler introduced me to Public Enemy's Nation of Millions.

I've been working on Jerks In Space #2 for a little while. Writing it has been as much fun as #1 was. At times this all feels ridiculous. My comic book reading time has been cut back since there's only so much that a guy can do after work. I've been surprised by how many times I choose to work on my own retarded comic instead of reading work done by real artists.

The way that I've been "scripting" JIS#2 evolved pretty naturally (I think it's similar to how Brian Lee O'Malley does). I sketch the page layout super tiny and write dialog, cations, and notes somewhere on the page. I hope to get quicker. In JIS #1 I was spending to long in my sketchbook. I shrunk my layout sketches so I don't get all caught up in stupid details. I think I heard Brian Lee O'Malley mention doing this in an interview somewhere.

Today was day 1 of San Francisco's Alternative Press Expo. The sheer scope of the event overwhelmed me- it was wall-to-wall self publishers, with the BIG DOGS in the center of the event... BIG DOGS being publisher like Cartoon Books, Slave Labor Graphics, Fantagraphics, etc.

I got to briefly meet Alec Longstreth and trade a copy of Jerks In Space #1 for Phase 7 #5. Without his comprehensive guide to self publishing, making Jerks In Space would have been a whole heck of a lot harder! That guy's a real hero of the scene. I can't wait to buy the Basewood trade when it comes out.

Happy surprise- I picked up issues 1 and 2 of Eric Haven's "TALES TO DEMOLISH" at the Sparkplug Comics booth and I unknowingly met Mr. Haven at the Buenaventura booth. Unfortunately I did not have the cash to buy his new offering from Buenaventura... I'll pick it up tomorrow.

Vancouver keeps it real

I was in Vancouver last weekend with Yi and checked out some great comic shops: Lucky's Comics, RX Comics, and the Elfsar Collection. Great shops!

After checking out these great places, I thought that Vancouver was incredibly down with good comics... but I had no idea how deep the love is!! Check this out- commissioned comic art by the bay:

I swear, that's the coolest public work arts thing that I've ever seen. Vancouver is for real!!
